Additional needs
Additional needs refers to children requiring extra support or adaptations to participate fully in everyday life. Children can have additional needs for many reasons including disability, developmental delay, developmental concerns, chronic health conditions, mental health or wellbeing difficulties or trauma. Additional needs may be short term or ongoing.
Early Childhood Intervention or Early Childhood Developmental Care?
Reimagine Australia, during its national consultation for the Action Plan, found that the use of terminology such as 'early childhood intervention' (ECI), can be a barrier for families. The language used must be culturally sensitive, positive and easy for parents to understand. Families suggested using terms like 'specialist developmental supports' instead of 'specialist intervention supports' and 'early childhood developmental care' instead of 'early childhood intervention'.
